September Meeting Information:

My experience volunteering for our Quilters Sew-Ciety has been very good for me in so many ways.  I thank all of you for your support.  AND if any of you are thinking of volunteering to help or head any committee, fill a vacancy or to run for an office, I encourage you to do so.  Now important information on  our Monthly Programs!  September 2, 2008 from 7:00 to 9:00.  Doors do not open until 6:30  - Our very own Susan Magrini will be presenting a trunk show.  Come find out more about one of your fellow guild members and enjoy her beautiful work.  Susan was the recipient of "Best in Show" award for her quilt entry in the Shasta County District Fair this summer.  October 7, 2008 from 6:00 pm to no later than midnight.  Doors open early for our Philanthropic Sew In for plenty of hours of sewing fun.  There are still kits available - you can pick them up at the Sept. Meeting.  November 4, 2008 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm features a program titled "I Am Thankful For" and and features YOU - yes, you are invited to bring your favorite notions, books, tips and tricks to share.  I am also looking for a guild member to head up our food drive for November, let me know if you are interested.  December 2, 2008 will be our Winter Holiday/Christmas Party.  It will start at 6:00 pm so that we will have lots of time to eat (Appetizer Buffet), visit and exchange cookies.  Yes - we will have a "Cookie Exchange" - more details will become available in the near future.  We also are inviting all members to make any kind of Seasonal Holiday item - anything from a Christmas stocking, an adult bib, a special bag that can be used on a walker or wheel chair, a lap robe or wall hanging that can be given to rest homes for people who don't have family and can really use some extra holiday cheer - and "holiday" is not limited to Christmas but includes all of the Winter Holidays - Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Solstice!  Please continue to bring your items for Show and Tell - a favorite segment of each of our programs.  Raven - 223-1434

August Meeting

Please join us for our August Guild Meeting Program on August 5, 2008 at the Senior Center on Benton DR.  Our featured speaker is Laura Nownes.  Laura in an internationally known teacher and quilter.  Together, with Diane McClune, she founded The Teacher Development Seminars resulting from their commitment to the continuing education of quilt making. She also facilitates the annual C&T Publishing Teachers Retreat - she is a teachers teacher!  Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy the art of fine quilt making by Laura.  The September Guild Program is not yet finalized, however, October's Guild Program is our annual Philanthropic Sew Night.  AND this year there is a lot of focus and planning for our philanthropic evening so expect a fun, energized hands-on quilt making experience in October.  The hot, dry weather and early fire season have been a worry for us all, I know.  We do have a very good excuse to not be out exercising or doing too much yard work in the smoky air, in fact, quilting is the perfect activity to while away a day when the weatherman says to "stay inside".   Stay happy and healthy and I will see you on August 5th!

Important:  Early dining before the August 5th program is open to any member of the guild - 4:30 pm at Pio Loco's.  Their food is good, the menu moderately priced (we go dutch), and their location is relatively close to the Senior Center.  This is a great opportunity to meet the Laura Nownes and spend time with your fellow guild members. Call Raven - 223-1434 if you will be part of the dinner party so that she can have an accurate head count to give to Pio Locos.

Christmas in July?

Yes, please think about what you would like for your Christmas Guild Program in December & share your ideas with any board member or come to the next board meeting yourself with your program ideas.

We would like to start collecting items for the giving season and want your ideas on what kind of seasonal, philanthropic endeavors you would like to be involved in from now through the holiday season - perhaps an ongoing food drive?

IMPORTANT!!!  We are missing the lovely poster board that Carlotta White made for the Quilt Show.

The board I am speaking of was the black display board that had photos of the school quilting projects and philanthropic quilts.

If you know where it is, please contact a board member right away.

Just a quick note and POETRY!

June 3, 2008 Program will feature Cresswell Physical Therapy demonstrating the proper ergonomics of sitting and crafting.  Remember that Art has invited husbands to attend this month - they will be shown how to sit and hold the remote in such a way that they are not impacted with repetitive motion ailments - JUST TEASING!  Truly speaking everyone wants to be able to participate in their favorite hobbies for as long as possible.  If your hobby involves sitting and doing any kind of handiwork - I am sure you will pick up some very helpful pointers from this month's program.  Local venders are invited to bring their ergonomic wares to show to all.  We will also have my favorite program segment "Show and Tell" as well as our usual featured program segments.  I found this great poem...

Quilt Show and Tell
A poem by Rose Kelley

The first time I witnessed a quilt Show and Tell,
I thought "Wow! These people can really sew well."

Sew "well," did I say, well that's just a joke!
Amazing the projects as done by these folk:
Artistic, dramatic, quite outside the line,
Stunning outrageous, gorgeous and fine!

They'd fall right out laughting at something of mine:

My uneven stiches, my lines all askew,
the fabrics I've chose, the markings still blue,
my edges all wavy!  The group would just stare
at corners not meeting, at points sort of square,
at obvious patches, and fusing to mend
the hole that I made with the seam-ripper end.

But then once I did show a project so odd
that no one could figure whatever would prod
a person to make such an ungainly thing
and then dare to show it to stichers who bring
fine art work, gereat clasics and projects with zing!
And nobody snickered!  And nobody joked!
And no one raised one single finger to poke
fun at my fabrics, my choice of design
and not once did anyone talk out of line!

In fact, they applauded, and smiles did appear
Some even showed intereset and seemed to lean near.

And that's when I realized the purpose of show
was not just for bragging or chances to crow.

The idea is to share inpsiration and fun
and love of the art, and look one by one
at each quilter's projects so dear to their heart
with all of the time, love and work they impart

Each project deserves full regard and respect,
no matter how simple or small.  Let's reflect

on the person who holds their ideas and work dear,
and cheer on the quilter who shows their work here.

July will be OUR patriotic program - a show and tell of all quilts Red, White and Blue!  And a pot luck.  I will have a sign up sheets at our June program for the July Pot Luck.   Have happy days full of quilty pleasures til we meet in June, Raven, your lucky VP

This workshop quilt, “The Big Tumble”, can easily adapt to just about any size up to 72” x 85”.  The question one might ask about the pattern is: “do you see stars or do you see blocks?”  This over-sized version of a classic pattern sparkles with a richness of colors and textures.  You will learn to tame the challenging y-seam with a new easier construction to create a striking quilt.  Instructions for three sizes are included in the pattern.

Laura Nownes

You may recognize Laura’s name as a teacher at the Empty Spools Seminars, held at Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, CA where Laura teaches a five-day class. Laura’s long-time connection with Diana McClun, co-founder and director of Empty Spools, started back in 1980 when Laura started teaching at Diana’s shop and, over time, together Laura and Diana have collaborated on five landmark quilt making books and an Instructor’s Guide for beginning and intermediate quilt making.

In 1986 Laura and Diana co-authored a beginning how-to book that was intended to be used just in the shop. However, The Quilt Digest Press chose to publish the book, that is when “Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!!” was born. The successful response to this book encouraged Laura and Diana to continue writing.

Laura and Diana have worked together on television programs, with study groups and in seminars. Their excellent teaching methods have touched thousands of students, providing them with a good start in basic quilt making. Together, they founded the Teacher Development Seminars resulting from their commitment to the continuing education of quilt making. Laura and Diana facilitate the annual C&T Publishing Teachers Retreat, and train quilt professions, guiding them in the skills of both teaching and quilt making. The classes they offer are always taught by experienced, well known quilting authors.

It is with great pleasure that we have Laura Nownes here in Redding to lecture at our evening guild meeting on August 5, 2008 and to teach an all day class titled “The Big Tumble” on Wednesday, August 6, 2008.
